NewPaakkola’s new innovative conveyor system enables a faster green transition.

NewPaakkola has developed a conveyor system utilizing advanced technology that can be used for the dry stacking of tailings. This new technology enables significant advancements for the green transition and provides substantial cost savings for the customer.

“Our new conveyor system designed for dry stacking offers an exceptionally wide range of benefits to the customer. The greatest advantage of dry stacking compared to traditional wet tailings disposal is that tailings ponds are not required, thereby eliminating water-related risks. With this new technology, we can significantly assist end customers in achieving their environmental goals,” says NewPaakkola’s CEO, Tommi Juntikka.

Tailings can be disposed of in various ways, but the majority of the world’s mines use wet tailings disposal. In this method, tailings are pumped as slurry into ponds: the solid material settles at the bottom of the pond, and surface water can be pumped back for reuse or disposal. These ponds require dam structures, which carry a risk of collapse. In dry stacking, the tailings are filtered and stacked as filtered dry material. Additionally, the tailings area can be divided into stacking sectors, which are opened and closed in phases. This method significantly reduces the size of the stacking area and minimizes dust emissions.

“Our conveyor system for dry stacking operates entirely on electrical energy, thus minimizing its climate impact. In traditional wet tailings disposal, the transportation work is done by haul trucks and machinery powered by fossil fuels, which are not needed to the same extent in dry stacking. Another major benefit is that dry stacking considerably simplifies the permitting processes and guarantees required in the mining industry,” explains Tommi Juntikka.

NewPaakkola’s new product was launched at Finnmateria 2024 in Jyväskylä, and international marketing will begin in 2025. The development project has been funded by the North Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.
